Overview

About 5% of children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 14 are affected by Behavioral Dysregulation, which refers to difficulty in managing emotions. Many of these children struggle to control their emotions and exhibit excessive emotional responses, such as frequent irritability, temper tantrums, tearfulness, unprompted outbursts, and difficulty self-soothing. They often find it challenging to identify emotions, self-regulate, and solve problems in social situations.

Children may struggle with self-regulation due to personality traits, parenting styles, environmental factors, or underlying conditions such as ADHD, autism, or mood and anxiety disorders. Self-regulation is a skill that must be taught and practiced.

One effective approach to improving these behaviors involves encouraging self-reflection, by a non-judgemental and non-emotional parenting style. This includes slowing down for thoughtful reflection, building self-awareness, and incorporating practices like mindfulness and meditation.

Children who struggle with behavioral dysregulation often have difficulty identifying their emotions. There are programs available that help young students develop essential skills such as emotional identification, distress tolerance, communication, emotional management, and relaxation.

However, the problem is that these programs are not accessible to everyone—whether due to paywalls, in-person-only formats, limited availability by location, or other barriers.

Since this app is designed for children, I wanted to avoid overwhelming them with too many options while still incorporating a game-like aspect to retain their attention and keep them engaged. To achieve this, the app includes lessons, an index and quizzes. With every lesson, a player can learn about certain emotions and collect cards that then go into their index, and at the end of every lesson there is an evaluation level with game-like visuals where an incorrect answer can result in a loss of health points and must be completed within a time limit.

Has been experiencing a lot more stress at school and at home. Grades are not improving and parents aren’t pleased with this, arguing about what to do. The child is experiencing negative moods like anxiety and depression. At school, the child has trouble maintaining their friendships, with frequent verbal and aggressive outbursts.

School has contacted the child’s parents saying that their behavior is disruptive to them and other students. They suggest that their child should try out programs that help children regulate behaviors.
